The Office of Workplace Services (OWS) has secured $12 000 in penalties against Quick Step Pty Ltd for underpaying entitlements to four casual security staff.

Quick Step is a Victorian security firm based in Frankston that supplies casual staff for security services including employees for subcontracting to larger security firms.

The Melbourne Magistrates' Court ordered the company to pay the penalties for 8 breaches of the Security Employees Common Rule Award 2005 amounting to $3,353.47 worth of underpayments.

This represents almost four times the amount of the original underpayments in overtime, ordinary time, shift work and public holiday rates investigated by OWS.

Quick Step subsequently rectified the underpayments two months after the OWS instituted proceedings.

However, in handing down her decision, Magistrate Chambers said, "I do not consider that ignorance of award obligations is a matter to which I should give much weight. The obligations imposed by the Common Rule Award are serious."

OWS Director Nicholas Wilson says employers need to inform themselves of their responsibilities to staff, and take necessary measures to ensure they are up-to-date with workplace law.

“Good employers know that an investment in their staff is an investment in the long-term future of their business.”
