TASMANIAN security guards are being warned to be on their best behaviour as stricter regulations come into force.

About 1600 applications are made for a security or crowd controller's licence each year in Tasmania and applicants already face tough nation-wide background checks.

But under tough new measures, due to come into effect by the end of the year, they will also face regular audits to check that no new criminal offences have been committed.

Court records will be checked by Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading staff in Tasmania to pick up pending charges or new convictions.

Those who do the wrong thing face being struck off and fined.
